
Edgardo Alvarez
Edgardo Álvarez Chávez is the Secretary General of ALIDE (the Latin American Association of Development Finance Institutions), a position he has held since 2016 and for which he was re-elected for the 2021–2026 term. He also serves as Secretary General of the World Federation of Development Financing Institutions (WFDFI), where he helps connect development finance institutions on a global scale.
With more than 25 years of experience in commercial, development, and investment banking, Álvarez has held senior management and executive roles in some of Peru’s leading financial institutions. His career also includes active involvement in Peru’s privatization processes, where he chaired several privatization committees and oversaw important divestment projects.
Álvarez holds a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering from the National University of Engineering in Peru and a Master’s degree from ESAN, Peru’s Graduate School of Business. He has also undertaken advanced management programs at the University of Piura, equipping him with strong expertise in leadership, strategy, and financial sector governance.
Throughout his tenure at ALIDE, Álvarez has worked to strengthen the role of development finance in promoting sustainable economic growth across Latin America and the Caribbean. His leadership has emphasized “green banking,” climate finance readiness, and expanding financial access for small and medium agricultural enterprises. By building partnerships with international institutions and fostering innovation in development banking, he continues to guide ALIDE in advancing financial solutions that support inclusive and sustainable development.
