Raymon van Anrooy is a Senior Fishery Officer and Team Leader in the Fisheries and Aquaculture Division of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), based in Rome. With a background in rural development economics and a PhD in fisheries marketing, he has more than two decades of international experience in fisheries and aquaculture policy, economics, and institutional strengthening.

His career began with artisanal fisheries development in Nicaragua and later in Vietnam, where he supported aquaculture communities and coordinated FAO’s emergency assistance for flood-affected fish farmers in the Mekong Delta.

At FAO, he has led work on the techno-economic performance of fishing fleets worldwide, advancing understanding of profitability, costs, and productivity across diverse fisheries. He has also been a leading voice on financial risk management, credit, and insurance in fisheries and aquaculture, helping small-scale operators gain access to protection and resilience tools.

More recently, he has championed the use of digital technologies, including GIS, remote sensing, and artificial intelligence, to improve monitoring and management of fishing fleets, particularly for small-scale vessels in the Caribbean and beyond. Through his research, publications, and field projects, van Anrooy continues to contribute to sustainable and inclusive fisheries and aquaculture systems that enhance food security and livelihoods globally.
